Georgia Bizios named Distinguished Professor for 2003-2004 by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture

“Georgia Bizios has broadened the vision of architecture by her inspired teaching and innovative ideas about environmental concerns, site issues and user needs. Successfully integrating teaching, scholarship, practice and service, her contributions extend beyond the classroom into the profession and the community.

Bizios has been at the forefront of architectural teaching for three decades. She has taught curricula at two major universities with emphasis on design process and has demonstrated, by example through her architectural practice, her commitment to involve owners and builders in the design and construction process.

The first female professor of architecture at Tulane University and the first female full professor at North Carolina State University College of Design, Bizios has touched architects worldwide with her teaching, scholarship, practice and service. Her mark as an exceptional educator can be seen in her desire to teach in the community at large, offering courses in and lectures on architecture to adults and elementary and secondary school students, as well as to practitioners and educators in the United States and abroad.

Bizios has served on numerous professional boards, committees and task forces and has committed exceptional energy and time to advise and mentor students and young practitioners. She has addressed mentoring issues at the national level at professional meetings and in task forces. In her practice, Bizios remains committed to hiring students and interns with no previous experience in architecture offices, thus facilitating their transition from school to practice.

Bizios has focused on the integration of education and practice throughout her career. She has enhanced her teaching by her diverse practice and informed her practice through the broad marketplace of ideas. She has been an active contributor to the intellectual discourse on the discipline of architecture sharing her knowledge and professional expertise through presentations and publications.

Georgia Bizios represents the best in the profession as an educator who considers the wider community her classroom.”
