Georgia Bizios designed her own home to fit the site in a quaint, established neighborhood near the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. We took a strong energy conscious approach in the design by elongating the form along the east-west axis. Deep overhangs and trees protect the large windows to the south while the north side contains smaller openings. We achieved a spacious feel inside by including light from two sides in every room, offering a variety of ceiling heights, and designing rooms that open onto other rooms. The high quality accomplished in this house is the result of design ideas rather than expensive details or materials. We also designed the house for future expansions: a lower level apartment takes advantage of the sloping site and provides a place for a student to live and walk to campus. Georgia's home was featured in The Chapel Hill News (July 13-19, 2001, click here to view the article) and is referenced in At Work At Home, Design Ideas for your Home Workplace (Neal Zimmerman. Taunton Press, 2001. p. 8). |
