Our client imagined and described to us her wish for a structure similar to
the ones she had stayed at during summer camps: simple volumes inside and out,
raised off the ground with a large roof and ample overhangs. This home is a
retreat, a "country" escape for its owner.
The exterior forms and materials are simple and designed for low maintenance
and set budget. The interior explodes with dramatic two-story volumes, open
stairs, continuous space, cozy lofts, a two-sided, wood-burning fireplace,
views, and light—lots of light.
We supported the open floor plan by generous, easily accessible storage and
appropriately placed furniture. We designed this house with many built-ins to
store an extensive book collection and flat files for drawings as well as the
furniture from the previous home. The staircase provides drama in the living
room by continuing to the attic that is insulated and used for storage.
This is a peaceful home for one, and a glorious place for houseguests and
large parties.
