This house is located in a new community that follows co-housing principles
and is committed to energy-conscious design and construction.
We organized the massing in a simple east-west gable reminiscent of the
North Carolina vernacular. Following the allowable building envelope, we bent
the two-story volume and designed a dining room patio and master bedroom
balcony. We took advantage of the long south exposure and provided a passive
solar energy system by installing a thermal mass on the floor of the living
areas (tile on slab) and by appropriately sizing the windows.
All living areas have light from two sides and cross ventilation. The
interior is spacious and filled with natural light. The offices overlook each
other and the living room. One office has a "foldable" wall that can transform
it into an extra guest area. With ceiling height variety, simple details and
natural colors, we created a serene environment and highlighted furniture and
artifacts.
