This house is located in a cohousing community that requires energy-conscious design and construction. The massing of the house is simple, with an east-west gable that recalls North Carolina vernacular architecture. A passive-solar energy system that takes advantage of the long southern exposure earns the homeowners a state tax credit. All of the living spaces have natural light from two sides and cross-ventilation. Interior finishes and details are simple, providing a tranquil backdrop to the owners' furniture, artwork, and artifacts.

Significant green features:

  • Passive solar system, with the floor as a thermal mass
  • Cross-ventilation
  • Natural lighting
